Stone Promise

A Stone Promise  by Cara Reichel, is a student-produced work and was the 1990 National winner in the 15+ age category of the "Written and Illustrated By..." Award.

This contest was the brain-child of the late David Melton, author, artist, illustrator, and publisher. Mr. Melton was absolutely convinced that the works of many young writers/illustrators were wonderful and deserved to be published and distributed. To that end he began the national contest that still continues differently named. (See our contest section for details.)

The copies of this book that are available are original, copyright 1991, first editions and limited in number. The price is $18.00 per copy for the book plus $4.50 for shipping and handling and  they can be ordered by including check or money order to our mailing address. (The profit from sales of this book will be donated to the National Creative Society and its mission.)

Here is what David Melton, the Creative Coordinator of Landmark Editions, Inc. wrote in the forward about the book and the author,

Cara Reichel is a poet and a musician. When one reads the text and sees her striking illustrations, it becomes evident that her work as a writer and illustrator is influenced by her poetic nature and love for music. The tonality of Cara's narrative and the fluid rhythms created within the structures of her sentences play as sweet music to the reader. Cara doesn't merely tell a story; she skillfully weaves a ribbon of places and events into a vibrant mosaic of moods and scenes.

While one may enjoy reading the prose of A STONE PROMISE in solitude, the lines cry out to be read aloud so the music of the language Cara has composed can be shared and enjoyed to the fullest. The graceful lines of Cara's illustrations offer the sensation of poetry and music in a visual form. Her black and whie silhouettes are perfect for the nature of her story. They help create a shadow play of light and darkness that we as readers feel privileged to experience and enjoy."

The Synopsis of the Story:
Remi, a young, vagabond orphan in midieval France is "on-the-run" from the law but is stopped in his tracks by an overwhelming experience of artistic beauty. He is befriended, cared-for, and inspired by many mentors and becomes a world-class stonecutter himself. He vows to create a magnificent statue for his impoversihed village whose downtrodden inhabitants can no longer see beauty in anything surrounding them. Will he remember his vow to bring beauty back home?
